A good graphic can stop you mid-scroll. A great one gives you something to come back to. That is the idea behind Classic Artists, Bonbonfire's range of art-inspired T-shirts: expressive images, everyday shapes and a little more to discover each time you wear them.
The collection brings together three distinct influences: the fractured viewpoints of Picasso-inspired Cubism, the colour and movement of Matisse-inspired cut-outs, and the storytelling of Utagawa Kuniyoshi's Japanese woodblock artwork. Across five tees, those ideas appear as everything from a small chest detail to a full back print.
Why we made Classic Artists
We wanted to make clothes with a point of view. Something you can throw on with your favourite jeans, but which still feels like a choice you have made. Art gives us a rich starting point: a surprising colour combination, an unusual face, a figure caught in movement, a scene with a story behind it.
For Bonbonfire, that belongs naturally in streetwear. The way you dress is a daily expression of what catches your eye. You might be drawn to the energy of a print before you know anything about its artist. You might recognise the reference immediately. Both are good reasons to wear it.
We also wanted room for different levels of expression. Some days call for colour across your back; others suit a smaller detail under an open shirt. Classic Artists gives the same creative idea different volumes, while keeping the clothes easy to wear.
Picasso-inspired Cubism: a different way of seeing
Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque helped develop Cubism, a way of making images that could bring multiple viewpoints into a single composition. Faces and objects could become arrangements of intersecting planes, with familiar subjects taking on an unfamiliar structure. MoMA's introduction to Cubism is a useful place to explore that history.
Our cubist portrait graphic takes its cue from that approach. Angular shapes, contrasting colours and an expressive face give it a strong identity. The design is a contemporary Bonbonfire interpretation, not a reproduction of a Picasso painting.
The Cubist Portrait T-Shirt puts the graphic across the back of a white tee. The Cubist Mini Portrait T-Shirt brings it down to a compact left-chest print with a plain back. The first makes the artwork the centre of your outfit; the second lets it become a detail someone notices up close.
Matisse-inspired cut-outs: colour with movement
Henri Matisse's cut-outs show how much life can come from a simple shape. Using paper painted with gouache, he cut and arranged forms into compositions full of colour and rhythm. You can explore the technique through MoMA's guide to his cut-outs.
That freedom is the starting point for our Sun Dance T-Shirt. A cobalt dancer moves beneath a red-orange sun, surrounded by sweeping botanical shapes and flashes of yellow and green. Against black fabric, the colours have room to shine.
Sun Dance is our own Matisse-inspired composition. What interests us is the relationship between the shapes: how a curved arm echoes a leaf, or how a flat circle can give the whole image a sense of warmth. It is a playful piece that needs very little around it.
Kuniyoshi: stories you can look closer at
The Kuniyoshi pieces bring another kind of energy. Where the contemporary graphics use simplified forms, these Japanese woodblock images invite you into intricate scenes. Patterned clothing, expressive figures and carefully placed lines reward a second look.
The Tamatori & the Octopus T-Shirt features Kuniyoshi's Tamakazura: Tamatori-ama. The image depicts the legendary diver Tamatori battling an octopus after recovering a precious jewel from the dragon king of the sea. The Metropolitan Museum of Art's record of the print explains the story behind the scene.
We were drawn to the composition's tension: the curling tentacles, the raised blade and the movement of the water. It has the immediate impact we want from a graphic tee, with a narrative waiting behind it.
The Warrior Portrait T-Shirt offers a different mood through detailed armour, layered fabric and Japanese lettering. Its muted green, warm red and gold tones make it a good starting point for an outfit built around darker denim or neutral trousers.
Five tees, two ways to approach the artwork
Classic Artists brings together contemporary artist-inspired designs and garments featuring historic artwork. The Picasso-inspired portraits and Matisse-inspired Sun Dance are Bonbonfire interpretations of artistic ideas. The two Kuniyoshi tees feature his woodblock imagery. Naming those influences matters to us: it gives you a route back to the art that caught our attention.
The collection is also varied in fit. The four white tees use 260 gsm, 100% cotton with a loose fit. The black Sun Dance tee has a regular fit in a 230 gsm blend of 81.4% cotton and 18.6% polyester. Check each product page when choosing your size, rather than assuming every style will sit the same way.
How to wear an art-inspired T-shirt
- Let a back print lead. Pair the larger graphics with plain trousers and uncomplicated footwear. Loose denim works well with the white tees' relaxed shape.
- Pick one colour to repeat. A blue cap or a muted red layer can connect with a detail in the artwork without making the outfit feel overly coordinated.
- Keep a quieter option in rotation. The Mini Portrait sits neatly under an open overshirt, with just enough graphic detail showing at the chest.
- Think about the whole silhouette. Balance the tee with trousers you enjoy wearing. Fit and comfort give the artwork a natural place in your day.

A few things worth knowing
Which artists inspire the range?
The current five-piece collection includes Picasso-inspired Cubist portraits, a Matisse-inspired Sun Dance design and two tees featuring artwork by Utagawa Kuniyoshi.
Is every design a large back print?
No. The Cubist Mini Portrait has a small left-chest graphic and a plain back. The other four styles carry their main artwork on the back.
How should I care for the tees?
Follow the garment's care instructions. The current product guidance recommends a gentle 30°C machine wash, low tumble drying and low-temperature ironing away from the print. Do not bleach or dry clean. Visit our sizing and delivery page for help before ordering.
Find the image that speaks to you
Classic Artists is an invitation to follow your eye. Start with a colour, a shape or a story, then make it part of the way you dress. That is why we made the range: to put interesting images into everyday rotation and give each tee something to say.
